“I Literally Froze When I Heard the Footsteps Behind Me!”

 

It was late and I was returning from the library, alone. My mind was on Calculus –
and then I heard the footsteps, right behind me…and I froze! My heart stood still, and so did I! Fortunately, the footsteps turned out to be from a fellow student, who meant me no harm. But I knew right then, with certainty, that if it had been an attacker, I was defenseless! And I was scared!”   Erika Marek –College student.

 

Luckily for Miss Marek, her situation turned out to be harmless…but this begs a question…

 

What would you do

if you were suddenly attacked

by a 200-lb man?

How did you answer this question? What would you do if confronted by an attacker, or if you found yourself in a situation that might lead to bodily harm?

If you are like most women, your answer was, “I don’t know>” We live in an increasingly violent society and very few people have the knowledge or skill to defend themselves.

But I have some news for you:

My name is Tom Burt.  I am the owner of AKKA Karate USA on Noland Rd. here in Independence. My school has been serving our community for the past 20 years. During that time we have empowered women just like you  with the confidence that comes from the study of the Martial Arts..

            As a Black Belt martial artist I am tired of reading stories in the paper or seeing reports on the news about innocent victims being accosted by bullies and societies low-lifes.

AND I AM DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

I began my martial arts training about 15 years ago when I was in college. At that time I also worked night security for the dorms. I remember one night walking around checking to make sure all of the doors were locked. I was walking toward the lobby of one of the buildings and two women were walking the same direction about 20 feet in front of me. It was a cold December night and I had on my black winter coat and a stocking cap. I was also carrying a large flashlight in my hand. It was dark and I guess I looked pretty suspicious because the girls took one look back at me and quickly sped up to get into the brightly lit lobby. I remember feeling bad that I had unwittingly frightened them. I thought it unfortunate that women on college campuses sometimes live with a lot of fear. Later, in my college years, I assisted in a women’s self defense class offered by the University. There were about 15 women in the class – all of whom had been attacked at some point in their lives. I was dumbfounded that, at the time, 1 out of every 5 women in college had been victims of some sort of assault, and these were only the reported cases. Statistics suggest that 80% of assaults go unreported!

 

Now, as a Martial Arts business owner, I feel I have a responsibility to the community I serve. My goal is to give you the knowledge and skill you need to give an answer to the question, “What would you do if you were suddenly attacked by a 200 pound man?” You will acquire tools – both mental and physical – to let the “man on the street” know,

“DON’T MESS WITH ME!”

As I said before many women live their lives with a certain level of fear. Fear can be like a toothless dog…all bark and no bite. In my experience there are two types of fear: Actual Fear and Perceived Fear. 

Actual Fear, or fear of circumstance, is where you find yourself in a truly dangerous situation…fear with bite. Like the fear of getting hit by a car when crossing the road, facing a vicious dog, or an approaching tornado. Or the fear of being molested by a 200-lb man. These types of fears are there to protect you by energizing your mind and body – fast. This is your “Fight or Flight” response.

The second type fear, Perceived Fear or fear of security, is different. This plays havoc with your minds sense of well being. This is fear with bark but no bite. What I mean is that with these fears you are never truly in danger of injury or harm (you just think you are). These are fears like...

·         Meeting new people.

·         Trying new things.

·         Holding to different ideas.

I urge you to consider that these are the fears that you must conquer. They have no use other than to hold you back, keeping you from your goals and dreams.

So, how do you conquer this second type of fear?

Secret #1: Remember…Fear is like a toothless dog…all bark and no bite!

Secret #2: FEAR = False Expectations Appearing Real

Secret #3: Conquer the fears with bite and you will defeat the ones with only bark.

So, how can you do this? Simple…
