How you “feel” is IRRELEVANT!
At first this may sound kind of callous…
“You mean you don’t care Mr. Burt?”
Yes, but not in the way you think.
When we let how we feel dictate what we do we relegate all accomplishment to when we are feeling good and nothing gets done when we are feeling less than our best.
Look at it this way. What would your boss say if you told them you don’t feel like showing up for work? What would your kids teacher say if your kid said they didn’t feel like going to school?
Our karate training is a tool to strengthen our self discipline and this means we come to class and practice EVEN and ESPECIALLY when we don’t feel like it. If we only did things when we felt like it we would never accomplish anything.
I get it, I really do. I can be lazy with the best of them. Just ask Mrs. Burt! (Ha!)
But I also know I am never going to be my best version of me by only doing things when I feel like it. It’s like lifting weights. I can buy the equipment or get a membership to a gym but if I never use it I am never going to get the benefits that come from working out.
One of the reasons I joined a CrossFit gym is I needed to be made to do what I would not do on my own. That is the same reason you came to the karate school. That is a teachers/coaches job. To MAKE you do what you wouldn’t do on your own so you can be your best version of you.
So, do I care about you…Yes! I want the best for you and I will do my best to give you the best training experience I know how to give so you can be your best version of you.
Do I care about how you feel? Let’s rephrase that question.
Do I care about the fact that you don’t feel like coming to class, sitting low, hitting hard, practicing at home, kiai loud…in other words…do I care about the fact you may not feel like doing what I expect of you as a student here at AKKA
NO…your feelings/opinions don’t matter. Why?
Remember…my job is to MAKE you do what you wouldn’t do on your own so you can be your best version of you.
Take care and see you in class…
