To Develop a Better Understanding of Others
As we improve mentally and physically through motion we begin to notice things about ourselves. We begin to realize we are capable of more than we thought we were and we gain an appreciation for our strengths. We also, sometimes painfully, become aware of our limitations which allows us to gauge where we are and to set goals to where we would like to be. It is this realization of personal strength and weakness that gives us insight into those around us. Once we become aware of it in ourselves we are more readily able to see it in others. This then enables us to develop a sense of understanding our fellow man because we see behaviors in them that are inherent in ourselves.
This then leads to a sense of compassion for others because how can we judge another when their actions are a part of our own nature as well?
The line between self and other now becomes less distinct. No longer can we differentiate between “me” and “you” but now it seems that both are, in essence, the same.
This is wisdom…To connect at the level of sameness and appreciate at the level of difference.
Let’s look at this from a scientific analogy for a minute…
The two most common elements in the universe are Carbon and Hydrogen. When you break everything down into its elemental composition you find that everything…and I mean everything is made up of these two elements-with a few thinks like Nitrogen and Oxygen thrown in here and there. In other words we all have the same chemical make-up…from person to person the only real difference is that the pieces are arranged in different ways. With this in mind then are we not all essentially the same? As far as Nature is concerned…yes. Nurturing and Environment lead to the differences we perceive in each other but we all come from the same Creator who made each one of us unique and yet we are all His children We are all members of the same family…the Human Race. If we are the same then should we not treat others as we would treat ourselves? Is this not the definition of respect and the true calling of us all? If each day we take measures to insure our personal survival why do we not do this for our fellow man?
“Wisdom is to connect at the level of Sameness
and appreciate at the level of difference.”
Let’s take the time to see beyond the borders of our constructed “realities” to those around us and reach out to those around us. Let us truly be honest with ourselves and reach out with a helping hand whenever we can wherever we are with whatever we have.
Take care and see you in class…
